The Edge of Love Dress

Have you seen the film, The Edge of Love? It's the one that's loosely based on the life of Dylan Thomas. Honestly, it wasn't that great, but I stuck it out because there was a buzz at the time about the outfits worn in the flick (and of course, Cillian Murphy). I just found these photos on my hard drive and thought I'd put them up. It was a rainy day when Anja took these photos, but we wanted to channel some of that easy, seaside look.

Day 25: My Best Joan Holloway Outfit

Anyone else going through Mad Men withdrawals? I totally am! We're going out to dinner with some friends tonight and I wanted to wear something unique, effortless and chic, so I pulled out this amazing Mr. Blackwell wiggle dress that I've been on the fence about adding to the shop. I can't deny that it makes me feel like I'm wearing something straight out of Joan Holloway's jewel-tone wardrobe. I'll probably be walking with her swagger all night, too!
Outfit Details:
Dress: Vintage 1960's Mr. Blackwell
Purse: Vintage 1950's Clutch (with awesome wristlet!)
Bracelet: H&M
Ring: 3-Finger Ring by BCBG
Shoes: Seychelles

The Velvety Vintage Sailorette Dress

Digging through my closet this morning I found this dress smashed between a couple of older vintage finds. I had been waiting all summer to wear this dress out, but because I bought it when it was just a bit too unseasonal for that kind of weather, it had made it's way out of sight and I had somehow forgotten all about it! Well the weather is cool now, and aside froem the spurts of rain, it's pretty much ideal for this velvety dress. It isn't actually real velvet, but a navy, poly-cotton-stiff-but-velvet-like fabric. I couldn't decide what shoes to wear, so I tried on a couple of pairs. The vintage pair were quite a spectacular find because I seem to have a hard time finding vintage shoes that aren't naaarrow (did you like that pun, 'n-aaa-row' shoes?) in anything over a modern size 8. What gives?

This dress has a terribly cute babydoll cut, and is sweet as can be. Every time I put it on, however, I wonder if this was a piece from a mother/daughter companion set. Maybe somewhere, there's a toddler running around in the same dress as me!

My cat, who is an indoor cat, often follows me outside when I take outfit posts. He tries to impress me with his hunting prowess and pretends to chase after birds, but I've never seen him catch anything except for his stuffed catnip toys, which are of course inanimate.

The Powder Blue 1950's Day Dress

I have been feeling inclined to wear full-skirted dresses lately. Perhaps it's that I've been spending a lot of time photographing fancy 50's party dresses for the shop, but from the moment my head leaves the pillow, I can only think of which dress I will put on. I launder or dry clean almost everything that goes into the shop, especially if it is cotton; This dress, which I borrowed from the shop (may be a keeper, should have never tried it on!), felt especially nice today as it had a freshly laundered smell and a crisp cotton feel. The dress has a welcomed amount of pouf on its own, but I added a crinoline because here's the truth: I love the swish and sway of it, plus getting in the car and tucking in all that extra fabric feels kind of special. In fact, I should have been photographing these outfits more...in the past week, the crinoline (and some full skirt, or another) and I have gone everywhere in public. I know some ladies are too shy to do so, but I really do suggest stepping out once in a while with a crini. I got compliments on my dress today from the ladies at the post office and the bake shop.
Well, here's a weird location! A building by the post office I frequent has been completely abandoned, and while looking for a secluded place to take photos, I decided to have a little inspection. The green glass windows were just calling to me.
Outfit Details:
Dress: Vintage 1950's from the shop
Purse: Vintage 1960's
Sunglasses: Marc Jacobs
Shoes: Cole Haan
Bracelet: Vintage Bangle
Necklace: Elizabeth Gillette

Day 30: The Rumors of Summer

Thank you for sticking around to these past 30 days! For the final day, it was warm- we're talking springtime warm, so I had to fish around the summertime side of my closet to find something that wasn't too chunky, too knit, or out of sorts with all the sun you're surely noticing in the photos. Since safari knows no season, I went with a giraffe print maxi-dress and a muriad of jackets and accessories. Bracelet on, bracelet off, black jacket, white jacket, too warm for a jacket, etc...Isn't that the way an outfit comes together anyhow?
I'll certainly be posting more outfits, probably even some throughout the weekend. Not sure when the next storm will blow in, but I'm going to enjoy the sunshine while I can.
Outfit Details:
Dress: Vintage (will be in shop next week)
White Cropped Sequined Jacket: Vintage Saks 5th (will be in shop next week)
Black Cropped Moto Jacket: BCBG
Maxi Slip: XOXO (don't actually know if you can see it)

Boots: My motorcycle boots that my dad got me at age 15 from Villains on Haight

The Sailor Dress

I picked up this sailor dress on Etsy, and I have to admit that I was afraid it would be a little too Lolita for me, but I just loved the buttons and the sailor-neck detail and had to give it a chance. I am surprised at how light it actually is. The material is velvet-like, but thin; stiff, but twirly. It's not really all that warm where I am today. Unusual, but it made putting on this vintage dolly, sailor, dress rather comfortable.

Floppy Hats and Seventies Dresses

Like every girl I know, I've been on the perennial hunt for a decent, wide-brim, floppy hat. You'd think it would be an easy find, seeing as they are pretty much in every retail store these days, but much to my chagrin I always seem to find something about them a little off. I had pretty much abandoned my search until this weekend, when I wasn't even on the hunt (you know the story), and I found this vintage one. It had that authenticity I had been looking for: not too big, certainly not too small, and even a bit Spy vs. Spy. I love it!
I've got to mention the dress while I'm at it, as it is pretty sensational and Seventies, too. I couldn't resist its electric blue allure, and as you've probably ascertained, I have a thing for flowy, comfortable, day-to-day dresses (secretary dresses or not, I dare say!). And the boots? Heck, you know I'll be living in them for as long into the summer as I can!

Tuesday Night's Outfit!

I've really been into dresses from the 1960's and 1970's lately, especially ones that have a touch of formality and look like dress-coats, even though they aren't. I picked up this sweet, 1960's dress a few months ago and have been dying to wear it ever since. This wall of ivy was such a great contrast, I couldn't help but snag a few photos.
I have a few wonderful dresses that I am looking forward to posting in the shop this week once they come back from being cleaned and pressed. There's an amazing, 'Jackie O' style, silk swing coat and sheath dress ensemble, a peach colored, late 60's early 70's dress that has a similarly inspired cut to the one I'm wearing in these photos, a green, paisley, 50's day dress, and a very Brady jumper dress with matching under-blouse!
